BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Dogma," rated "R" and with a running time of two hours is a boldacious spoof on religion. Mat Damon and Ben Afleck star as angels who have been kicked out of heaven and now are attempting to return "home." Thanks to a seemingly benign delivery they find out about a loophole that will allow them to get back to heaven. There's a church in New Jersey that is having a celebration to change the image of the church and recruit a new constituency.

At the same time, Bethany, a cynical, angry woman is visited by other angels sent from above who recruit her to block the fallen angels from returning to heaven. Turns out that if the two angels make the return safely it will have the effect of destroying the world. After all sorts of wild interventions the sinners and saints have it out in New Jersey.

From the visually impaired point of view. This movie starts out with a written disclaimer on the screen. A sighted assistant is crucial here. The dialogue is fast and furious in many spots, which is actually good. However there were many times where loud music blasted over dialogue and many times you didn't know who the dialogue was coming from. There were way too many characters coming in and out at weird times with many scenes that jumped from one thing to another. Very hard to follow. This movie also had lots of special effects which was all but lost to me. I kept needing explanations of what was going on and these descriptions were difficult for my sighted assistant to convey in a timely fashion. Towards the end there was an incredible amount of what appeared to me as scattered, convoluted happenings that it inspired in me a longing for the end of the movie.

If you're wild about anything having to do with religion in movies, well then I guess you might be interested in this one. But otherwise my advice is to take a pass and wait for another movie. I'll give this one a 4.
