BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"A Thousand Acres," rated "R" and with a running time of a little less than two hours, is a slow moving story about a successful but aging farmer from Iowa and his three daughters.

Larry Cook, Jason Robard, decides on a whim to give his land to his daughters. The stubborn and proud farmer quickly cuts out his youngest daughter when she questions her father's decision. The oldest daughter, Rose, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ginny, portrayed by Jessica Lang, attempt to help their sister and father make peace. Peace, however, never happens. In fact, things get worse and worse as old skeletons from the past begin to surface.

This is a very interesting movie that exposes the devastation of a family due to incest. It also points out how difficult it is to break the pattern of denial that runs among relatives and communities regarding sexual abuse within families.

I appreciated the caring relationship between Rose and Ginny, but was a bit appalled by the weak characters of the men in the film. All the men were portrayed as rigid, unconscious and sexist with no integrity whatsoever.

I hope these kinds of movies are well attended. Let's support Hollywood when they take a risk, exposing an age-old familial problem that continues to destroy the lives of thousands of innocent children.

From the visually impaired point of view, the content of this movie was very heavy, however it was pretty easy to follow. There was lots of dialogue, very little conflicting music or background noise, and really only two main characters. There were some challenges, though. I frequently had difficulty figuring out which sister was talking because both their voices sounded so similar. I needed a number of brief descriptions from my sighted assistant at the beginning of quite a few scenes, however it got easier as the movie went on.

I'll give this film a 7 and encourage you to check it out. You'll follow it all right, but the story itself may be a bit upsetting.
