BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Eve's Bayou," rated "R," and with a running time of about two hours, gives us a look at the power of psychic readings, voodoo and fortune telling on the lives of the black culture in Bayou country.

Ten-year-old Eve, played by Jurnee Smollett, accidentally sees her father, Dr. Louis Battiste, played by Samuel L. Jackson, fooling around with another woman at a party. Although Eve loves her daddy and is always vying for his attention, she begins to question his integrity. Eve tells two people, her siter, Ciselly, and her Aunt Mozelle, played by Debbi Morgan. Mozelle has pyschic powers and can see into the future for everyone but herself. She's been cursed with the death of three husbands. Aunt Mozelle tries to comfort and reassure Eve about her father, but Eve begins to hate him when she finds out that he has hurt Ciselly, her older sister. She begins to wish him dead.

From the visually impaired point of view, this movie begins and ends with a narrative. This is always good for blind movie-goers. But right after the beginning narrative there is much confusion. The movie opens at a party with lots of music, which overwhelms the dialogue. Things move fast with abrupt scene changes and no information about who is who. This was confusing for my sighted assistant, so you can imagine how confusing it was for me. The voices of the women were hard to differentiate. There were a few flashbacks and a few scenes with brief flashes of visions that the psychic was having. These were very difficult, but made sense after receiving information from my sighted assistant. When the dialogue was consistent the movie was quite enjoyable.

The story was very intriguing and held my interest in spite of the challenges. I'll give this one a 5 but encourage you to check it out, especially if you enjoy learning about our black culture in this country.
