BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Get On The Bus," is the latest Spike Lee movie, rated "R" and with a running time of about two hours. There are no "stars" in this movie, surely a decision Lee made, choosing to focus exclusively on issues. A bus takes off from California, with 20 black men, headed for the "Million Man March" in Washington, D.C. The trip brings up all sorts of challenges for the men, mostly having to do with their unique differences.

As a white man, I felt like a fly on the wall on this bus filled with black men, observing the way racism has affected them. I don't think many white people get a chance to hear and learn about the struggles of Afro-American men. This movie exposed the severe criticism they target at each other, confronting one another continuously, and with a hostility, in the name of curiosity. In spite of this back-biting, these men had a strong conviction to do something to upgrade the standards of life for black America. They still had a dream and were hopeful.

I believe this movie should be required for all high school students to see. It's loaded with precious information and could be used to understand and dismantle the effects of racism.

From the visually impaired point of view, this movie was pretty easy to follow. The majority of the film took place on the bus with very few jumps from scene to scene. The dialogue was almost non-stop and most of the time the music was not conflicting with conversation. There were a few difficulties, however. Often the dialogue was quick, with lots of people getting involved. At times it helped to let go of trying to figure out who was speaking and just focus on what they were speaking about. Towards the end of the movie there was a scene with busses and cars in a traffic jam. They had banners with phrases across their sides. I would have missed all the phrases and the potency of the scene without a sighted assistant. Right after that scene they flashed to the large crowds of men in Washington, D.C. with snippits of different speeches going on. I knew what was happening but did not feel the power of the scene.

I give this film a solid 8. The content is excellent and it's easy to follow.
