BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"The Cider House Rules," rated PG 13 and with a running time of two hours and ten minutes is a story about independence, finding yourself and coming home.

Dr. Larch, Michael Caine, has made a life out of running a home for orphans in Maine. He took one special orphan under his wing, treated him like a son and hoped that he would follow in his footsteps. The orphan, Homer Wells, played by Tobey Maguire, is now a young adult. He cares deeply for the doctor, loves the kids at the orphanage, but is anxious to go out in the world on his own.

Homer gets a ride away from the orphanage and ends up picking apples and living with migrant workers. He learns many new things about life including some things about himself that he didn't know before.

From the visually impaired point of view. This flick starts out with a long narrative which is very informative, an excellent beginning. The movie moves at a reasonable pace, there is ample dialogue and the main characters are easy to make out. There was no background music or noise to cause a distraction. This again was very good.

There were some challenges though. There were many long pauses during many scenes when I needed to ask my sighted assistant for information. Sometimes nothing was happening but I was too uncomfortable with not knowing if I was missing anything. Through a good part of the picture the scenes went back and forth from the cider house to the orphanage. I had to keep up with the changes, at times this was difficult. The scenes with the migrant workers needed my sharpest attention because of their heavy Southern accents. I missed some of what was said but managed to get the jist of most scenes.

This movie was interesting and powerful with its messages about life. I'll give this one a 6 and encourage you to see it.
