Helena Bonham Carter stars as Kate, the poor daughter of an irresponsible father. She is taken in by her Aunt Maude, a woman of high society. Maude wants Kate to marry a wealthy man, but Kate's lover, Merton, portrayed by Linus Roache, is not rich. Kate befriends Millie, Alison Elliott, a very wealthy single woman, and accidently finds out that Millie has a terminal illness. Kate coerces Merton into seducing her friend, Millie, in the hopes that Millie will leave a fortune to Merton. Things, however, don't go exactly as the conniving Kate had wished.
From the visually impaired point of view, this movie began with a bunch of brief scenes, some with lots of commotion and chaos, noise from large groups of people. It was very difficult to understand the dialogue during these moments. Things settled down pretty quickly though, with scene changes that were less abrupt and easier to follow. There were only six characters, three with the bulk of the dialogue. This was good and made it relatively easy to comprehend. The movie went so slow at times that I could discuss some subtleties with my sighted assistant without losing the flow, truly a rarity in the movies these days. Although this was convenient for visually impaired concerns, the story often dragged. There were a few romantic scenes that needed visual descriptions, but all in all this one was relatively easy to follow.
I'll give this movie a 7. If you're addicted to tragic romances and love triangles, you'll probably enjoy this one.
