BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Fargo," rated "R" and with a running time of about one hour, forty minutes, is a movie that exposes the understated way some people live their lives. Nominated for "best picture" at the Oscars, the story takes place during winter in the north country, between Fargo, North dakota and the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Margie Gundersen, played by Oscar winner Frances McDormand, is the local sheriff who just happens to be very pregnant. She plays a Columbo-like cop, who's hot on the trail of a couple of killers. The killers are desperate and dumb, but not quite as dumb as Jerry Lundgarten, the car executive who originally hired them to kidnap his wife. Murphy's law works for this slimy, coward of a character, portrayed by William H. Macy, as everything that could go wrong for him, certainly does go wrong.
This movie was nominated for best picture of the year? They must have been kidding, right?

From the visually impaired point of view. The movie starts out with about five or six minutes of silence. Not a great beginning. The characters did have distinct voices and were not too difficult to follow. But that's when there was dialogue. I found myself getting a number of running descriptions from my sighted assistant because of long visual scenes. Very challenging. The Scandinavian accents were amusing, but no real problem. Bang, bang, shoot 'em up scenes are almost always filled with chaos and confusion because I never know who shot who. Getting this information second hand seems to always dilute the potency of the scene. I had a good laugh, however, as my assistant gave me detailed descriptions of one gory scene after another.

I can't give this movie more than a 5, but if you like cops and robbers movies, you might enjoy this one.
