BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People
"The Green Mile," rated R and with a running time of three hours is an intriguing movie about prisoners on death row and their relationships with the men who guard them.
Tom Hanks stars as Paul, the head guard in charge of the cell block that houses prisoners who are condemned to die. He has a good working relationship with all the other guards except for Percy, the Governor's nephew. Percy, according to Paul, is "mean, careless and stupid, a bad combination."
A new prisoner arrives one day who has allegedly murdered two young girls, but Paul sees something special in John, a very large black man. Their friendship grows when John helps Paul with a health problem, but eventually becomes strained for Paul as John's day for the electric chair draws near.
From the visually impaired point of view. This film starts off with the usual five minutes of silence as the old Paul, in present time, is living in a home for old folks. This whole scene needed descriptions from my sighted assistant. Soon he begins to tell his story to a friend at the home and the flashbacks begin. Once again the first scene back in 1935 in Louisiana is in silence, for the most part, and needed more descriptions. Although the bulk of the picture takes place in the cell block, there are still many scenes where I did not know what was going on. A number of scenes focused on a mouse and the tricks it could do. Obviously very hard for blind movie lovers. There were a few scenes with magical powers taking place, once again very hard to understand without help. The voices of the men were quite challenging to distinguish and their Southern accents made it even harder to understand them. The dialogue was interesting, that is, when it made sense to me and I knew who was speaking.
The story is a good one and is worth attending, but this is a tough picture to follow. I can only give this movie a 5 and warn you that it will be difficult.
