BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"As Good as it Gets," rated "R," and with a running time of a little over two hours, is an uplifting, light love story. Jack Nicholson stars as Melvin Udall, a crotchety, old, eccentric writer who seems to hate everyone. Helen Hunt is Carol, a struggling waitress who lives with her mother and her sickly son. Melvin has an uncanny ability to trash people with every sentence, and one morning in a restaurant, he says the wrong thing to Carol. She does not let him get away with this, and tells him off in no uncertain terms. This begins their very strange relationship.

From the visually impaired point of view, this movie only had three major characters, which made it pretty easy to follow. All three had very distinct voices that could not be mistaken. This was good. There was lots of dialogue, which was also good. However, there were many little subtleties that my sighted assistant tried, somewhat in vain, to describe to me. There were a few scenes with no dialogue at all and a number of scenes with some dialogue, but not enough to have allowed me to relax and easily understand what was going on without descriptions. There are some great lines in this picture and Nicholson is superb in the role of Melvin.

I'll encourage you to see this one, but I'll only give it a 6.
