Jerry, played by Cruise, is at the top of his profession until, out of nowhere, his company abruptly fires him. He leaves, angry and desperate about keeping his best athletes under contract. In spite of his efforts, he loses all his clients except one--a cocky, self-centered wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. Cuba Gooding Jr. Plays the receiver, Rod Tidwell, and is delightful in the role, flexibly showing off his many talents.
Dorothy, played by Renee Zellweger, is the only office worker who maintains loyalty to Jerry, and together they form their own company with the hopes of Jerry making it back to the top.
There are quite a number of strong characters in this movie with lots of caring relationships that are very believable. I liked watching the struggle Maguire goes through as his life and his values change.
From the visually impaired point of view, this is another movie that starts out quite challenging, but becomes easier in time. This one began with a narrative while scenes were changing every ten seconds. Listening exclusively to the narrative makes the best sense here. I started out trying to get descriptions from my sighted assistant, but the changes were too abrupt and the brief descriptions from my friend were in competition with the narrative. The frenetic energy continued for awhile, exposing the insane lifestyle of the business world. This was difficult but somewhat acceptable to me because of my knowledge of the sports world.
Another challenging moment in the movie occurs during a driving scene, when there is just music. This action would have been missed completely and would have been very confusing without an assistant. Later in the movie there is a football game, with scenes flashing back and forth from the game to the living room of the family of the star player. Again, this would have been tough to figure out without help.
On the positive side, all voices were distinct and the dialogue was pretty consistent. In spite of all the difficulties, I'm going to give this movie a 6 and encourage you to see it. It's do-able with a good assistant and filled with stimulating questions about our values and lifestyles in the U.S. of A.
