Darius, played by Larenz Tate, perseveres in his attempt to become romantic with Nina, portrayed by Nia Long. After some hesitation, she allows the romance to blossom. After the joyful first few weeks, struggles begin to pop up, as they get more deeply involved.
Here's a chance, with this movie, for white people to learn more about the Black culture that exists in our country. How come my sighted assistant and I were the only whites in the theater?
This was also a picture that showed Black people struggling with romance, but without any violence -- a realistic piece about everyday life in many Black communities.
From the visually impaired point of view, here's another movie that was difficult in the beginning, but settled down quite nicely. There were a number of scenes with a group of friends, hanging out together. The conversation was fast, with lots of quick one-liners. I often had no clue who was talking, and missed many of the lines because of either their accents or their phrasing. At times I had difficulty trying to figure out who was talking. There was a romantic scene with just music. It was fun receiving a description from my loyal and devoted, sighted assistant, but I still felt like I was missing something. There was one segment when the camera flashed back and forth, from Darius in one room, to Nina in the other. There was a dramatic scene at a train station, with Darius running, desperately attempting to reach the departing train. Both scenes were silent and I would have been lost without an assistant.
On the other hand, there was lots of dialogue and the good jazz music did not interfere too much with my ability to hear the speakers. The movie went slowly, and was easy to follow from scene to scene. There were really only two main characters and only a couple other characters in the whole movie.
I'll give this one a 6.
