BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Kundun," rated PG-13, is the second movie to come out recently, detailing the fascinating life of the Dali Llama as well as the events that led up to the occupation of Tibet by China. The two-hours-plus picture has a story line, but comes across more as a documentary. The story begins in the late nineteen thirties and ends in the nineteen fifties, from the interesting discovery of the reincarnation of the fourteenth Dali Llama, through his years of training by Tibetan monks, to his desperate attempt to flee from the Chinese government.

From the visually impaired point of view: This was quite a difficult movie to follow. The first twenty minutes or so were mostly silent with lots of scene changes. Right off the bat I needed a constant supply of descriptions from my sighted assistant. This was not a good sign. Things occasionally got better at times as the movie went on, but there was no point where I actually relaxed. The music was filled with Tibetan chanting along with some of their unique sounding instruments. This was appealing but did not make the story any easier to follow. Too much visual, too little dialogue.

I can only give this one a 4.
