Holly Hunter stars as Judith Nelson, a nurse who is lonely and somewhat desperate thanks to her cardiologist husband's recent love affair with a female doctor in pediatrics. Danny DeVito stars as Pat, a struggling elevator operator in Judith's building. He's lonely, financially dependent on his brother and has just watched his daughter die from some dreaded disease.
The two of them strike up a conversation one day in the elevator and eventually become friends. Pat, although respectful, is pretty excited about their prospects, but on the other hand Judith is not so sure. Their friendship grows but does not end up where you might expect it to.
From the visually impaired point of view, the first fifteen minutes of this movie was pretty tough with quick scenes, a number of different characters, fantasies, flashbacks and very little dialogue. My sighted assistant had some difficulty figuring out what was happening at times, but with good descriptions we plodded through the beginning. Throughout the movie I continued to need brief descriptions of subtle things but after the beginning struggle, things did eventually settle down. The music was not a distraction except for a disco scene in which there was only music and no dialogue. Descriptions were obviously needed there. The last half of the movie was much easier to follow in general, with scenes unfolding in reasonable fashion and consistent dialogue. Some dialogue led to some very funny results.
I'll give this movie a 6. Check it out if you like romantic comedies but take a good sighted assistant.
