Ted, played by Ben Stiller, is a scared teenager who falls for Mary, Cameron Diaz, when she asks him to the high school prom. Ted never gets to take Mary to the prom due to a number of outrageous events which leaves Ted in a hospital. Thirteen years later Ted decides to hire a private investigator to try to find Mary's whereabouts. The private eye finds Mary, falls in love with her himself, misleads Ted with erroneous information about his old flame, then attempts to woo her. Hopelessly unlucky, innocent and gullible, nevertheless Ted continues his search for Mary until he finds her.
From the visually impaired point of view: This was another in a string of tough movies lately. There was lots of laughter in the theater but I was unable to enjoy very little of it. Most of the laughter came from scenes that were almost totally visual. This was difficult. I hate missing a good laugh. My sighted assistant had a difficult time descriging things to me during these scenes because they were complex, chaotic and over in a flash. The music was pretty good and not too overwhelming, but there were many abrupt scene changes.
I would be remiss if I did not reprimand this director for the tasteless discrimination of disabled people. There are some intelligent and classy directors who have figured out how to make their audiences laugh without being invalidating to other people or groups of people.
Anyway, I'll give this movie a 4.
