Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People
"Music Of The Heart," rated PG 13 and with a running time of two hours is a touching and inspiring true story about a violin teacher, her music program and its positive influence on a community.
Roberta Gaspari, played by Meryl Streep, recently has separated from her Naval officer husband. She's pretty scared about facing the world as a single mother, but knows, or at least thinks, she can teach violin. She and her two boys relocate to New York City because of a job... teaching violin to elementary students in East Harlem. Roberta begins as a substitute teacher with very little support, lots of rowdy kids and many skeptical parents, but persists in spite of the difficult conditions. Her struggles at home with her children and the men in her life add to the drama as she works hard at developing a strong music program in the community.
From the visually impaired point of view. This movie starts out with a collage of pictures of Roberta growing up. Descriptions are necessary because, as usual, the first five minutes are in silence. It's a good time to breathe here because things don't get a whole lot better for awhile. The next few scenes are abrupt and kind of unclear, but soon she moves to New York and the movie becomes much easier to follow. There is one main character, Roberta, and her two children who are easy to understand. This is good. The music was fun, enjoyable and not really a distraction. There were many scenes with ample dialogue, but never consistent enough for me to really relax.
Nevertheless, Music Of The Heart is a very sweet movie that will bring tears to many eyes, even if you can't see what's going on. I can only give the movie a 6 but highly recommend it, especially to music lovers and teachers.
