BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Mr. Holland's Opus," with a running time of about two and a half hours, and starring Richard Dreyfus and Glenne Hedley, is an uplifting, inspirational movie about the teaching profession.

Dreyfus plays a musician who takes a teaching position at a high school. He plans to teach music only temporarily, with his dream of composing a symphony his true passion. Glenne Hedley plays his wife who gives birth to a deaf boy, obviously a crushing blow to her husband, whose whole existence focuses around his music. Dreyfus once again shines, skillfully exposing the character's imperfections and struggles; the kind of trials and tribulations that most teachers understand only too well.

Sometimes Hollywood movies have happy endings that are grounded in reality enough for you to believe them. This is one of those movies.

Sadly, this movie will be very difficult to follow for visually impaired people. On the positive side, there were only a few important characters to keep up with, and they all were unique enough to be recognized easily. Now for the negatives. There were many scenes with no dialogue, but lots of singing and music. The music was enjoyable, but you could get lost in a flash without an assistant to help. There were a few times when the screen showed visual collages of events from the sixties and seventies. During these times only a running dialogue would be adequate. Three or four long scenes were totally silent and the last half of the movie was filled with signing for communication with their deaf son. It's essential for the blind and deaf communities to understand each other's unique situations in our society, but is it possible to make a movie about deaf people that would be clear enough for blind people to follow...?

At any rate, I have to give this movie a rating of only 4, but I'll still encourage those gutsy visually impaired moviegoers to give this one a shot. It's a difficult movie, but one well worth it. If you do go, make sure you go with a sighted friend who is willing to hang in there with you.
