BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Playing By Heart," rated "R" and with a running time of roughly two hours is a sweet story about intimacy‹the struggles we go through to find it and the joys we receive when we actually attain it.

Sean Connery and Gena Rowlands star as Paul and Hanna, parents of three daughters and working on reaching their fortieth anniversary. It's really work though, because Hanna wants to talk about some issues and Paul really doesnąt want to. Their daughters are going through their own versions of relationship struggles, intensified by their wounds from old relationships and powerful present time emotions. One quality of healthy relationships may be perseverance. This family perseveres.

From the visually impaired point of view. This movie started out as a real doosy. The first five scenes were of five different couples. There were so many characters in this film that the director decided to put their names next to them in those beginning scenes. Some of the voices were too similar to easily distinguish one from the other. Ok? Got the picture? Very tough!

On the positive side, the music was good and appropriate, not interfering except in the scenes at a disco-type bar. The individual stories were sweet. Thing began to make sense towards the middle of the movie. At one point I found myself anticipating when the scenes would switch to the older couple, for example. Best of all, there were no scenes without dialogue throughout the whole film.

If you take a chance and go to this movie, remember there are three sisters. I didn't get that until I left the theater and was informed by my friends when discussing the movie. Remember also that you can enjoy this movie more if you donąt obsess about always trying to figure out who is who. Go with the flow, enjoy the dialogue and relax a little. Things will fall into place eventually and, even though you will inevitably miss some specific stuff, you still may very well be able to enjoy the feelings associated with the picture. I'll give this one a 5. If you check it out, please take a good sighted assistant and do some slow breathing.
