Governor Jack Stanton, played by John Travolta, is a down-home kind of presidential candidate who likes all kinds of people. His wife, Susan, portrayed by Emma Thompson, is loyal, a little cold but sharp when it comes to strategizing. Libby, superbly played by Kathy Bates, is the governor's "dust buster," and she'll do anything to thwart those who are trying to undermine the candidate's rise to prominence.
Governor Stanton has some skeletons in the closet about drugs and war, but the one that keeps coming up is his alleged out-of-control sexual escapades.
The insanity of the political game that goes on in this country is exposed in this movie. Makes you wonder why anyone in their right mind would put themselves through such a humiliating ordeal.
From the visually impaired point of view, this movie was filled with dialogue which was great. The Governor's voice was distinct but other characters' voices were not so obvious. Most scenes had lots of people with quick, abrupt conversation. This was challenging at times. There were only four main characters but many other characters in minor or cameo roles. This, too, was a little hard to follow. There were a number of scenes with continual dialogue, but important visuals were taking place at the same time. You'll need the information from your sighted assistant to stay connected to the scenes, but when you get the information, you'll inevitably miss some dialogue.
This picture had lots of crowds, lots of chaos and confusion, but also lots of good stuff. I'll give this one a 6 and encourage you to check it out.
