BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"How to Make an American Quilt," starring Winona Ryder, with a running time of just over two hours, is a soft but interesting movie. Ryder portrays a 26 year old "somewhat liberated" woman, who is trying to complete her third attempt at a thesis for her Masters degree. She spends the summer at her grandmother's house where she interviews granny and her five quilt-maker friends as the six older women work on a quilt, their wedding present for the confused interviewer. She's confused about marriage and her role as a woman, and after hearing stories from all the older women about their relationships with men, it fascinates me that she somehow reaches clarity and "lives happily ever after." Oh Hollywood, you've done it again... but personally speaking, these kind of Hollywood endings are boring and an insult to the intelligence of the audience. I guess there was a point to be made about the obscene, insensitive and unconscious behavior of males in our country, but honestly now, we're not all that bad, are we?

From the blind point of view, this is not a movie to see alone. There was a good deal of dialogue, but often the dialogue was interpreting some scene that was taking place on the screen and the combination was difficult to follow. The characters were named and the voices were unique enough to differentiate, but there were many times where scenes jumped without being obvious. And there were a few scenes where a blind person would be completely lost without some information from a sighted friend. One good thing; the flashbacks were not too fragmented and were pretty easy to follow.

I wasn't impressed with this movie but we'll give it a rating of 6 anyway. That's right on the borderline as far as comfort and enjoyment go. I wouldn't get too excited about this one but you might give it a shot if you've got a sighted friend and you have an afternoon with nothing to do.
