BLINDSPOTS:
Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People

"Rainmaker," rated "R," and with a running time of about two and a half hours, is yet another John Grisham movie about good lawyers versus bad lawyers and corruption in our country.

Matt Damon stars as Rudy Baylor, a young lawyer, fresh out of law school. He begrudgingly takes a job with a well known corrupt lawyer to ward off unemployment. After awhile he and fellow worker Deck, skillfully portrayed by Danny DeVito, leave their sleazy boss behind and start up a practice on their own. Rudy, filled with compassion for a mother and her dying, leukemia-stricken son, takes their side in a case against a big insurance company. In his first case, Rudy awkwardly stumbles through legal battles against Leo Drummond, Jon Voight, the high-powered attorney for the insurance company.

This movie certainly exposes the lack of integrity that exists within the legal system, some strategies involved with jury selection and the luck involved with finding out which judge presides over the case. If films like this help keep the big corporations from pillaging and plundering at will, then they're well worth it.

From the visually impaired point of view, this movie, unlike the large majority of flicks, started out with a narrative and non-stop dialogue for the first fifteen minutes or so. It was very easy to follow in the beginning, truly a rare treat for visually impaired folks. All the major characters had unique voices that were easily identified. The music was subtle or non-existent, another plus. It got a little tougher toward the middle, but only for awhile. There were a few times I needed descriptions from my sighted assistant, but usually just at the beginning of a scene. There was one very intense scene with violence that was filled with sound effects and would have been impossible to comprehend without lots of help.

In spite of the shortcomings, I'll give this one an 8 and encourage you to go see it. Seems like, in general, movies that have legal battles and courtroom scenes also have lots of dialogue and are usually pretty easy to follow.
