Ruth, played by Laura Dern, is a homeless, druggie who finds herself pregnant for the fifth time. She thinks she wants an abortion, but Norm, the local leader of the "right to life" group, played by Kurtwood Smith, has other ideas for Ruth. He takes her into his home to try to "save" her and her unborn baby. Ruth, however, really doesn't want to be "saved" and is "freed" from her righteous "captives" by an undercover member of the "pro choice" group. The absurdity heightens when both groups begin offering financial rewards if she sides with their group. Burt Reynolds has a small role in this picture, portraying the national leader of the "pro right to life" group. Why this role, Burt?
Maybe stupid satires about intense, controversial issues can help us get more of a balanced perspective on the hot issue at hand. In my opinion, this is the movie's only redeeming feature.
From the visually impaired point of view, this picture wasn't too difficult to follow. There were a few scenes where I needed running descriptions from my sighted assistant. However, the story line was not complicated, there were no weird flashbacks, the voices were relatively easy to follow and the music did not interfere much with the dialogue. I'll give this one a 7.
