Movie Reviews for Visually Impaired People
"The Sixth Sense," rated PG 13 and with a running time of a little less than two hours is a gripping story about a boy who sees dead people. The movie has a fascinating twist at the end which is stimulating in many ways.
Malcolm Cohn, played by Bruce Willis is a well respected psychiatrist who has just been recognized by the newspapers for helping many children. Unfortunately, that very night an intruder, an ex-patient from ten years ago, shoots the doctor, then kills himself.
Next flash, it's the Fall and the doctor has another young patient. This time it's 9 year old Cole, portrayed by Haley Joel Osment, who reminds the doctor of his old patient and perpetrator. Cole is tormented by visions of dead people and is misunderstood by his mother and school. Cole cautiously opens up with the doctor and they develop a relationship as the doctor attempts to make amends for his past failure.
From the visually impaired point of view. This movie started out all right but got much harder to follow. There were only three main characters, the young boy, the doctor and the mother. This was good. The dialogue was clear with no major distractions and the movie flowed normally from one scene into the next.
The first scene, the initial murder scene, was a bit difficult and I needed descripttions, but it did not feel overwhelming. The feeling of overwhelmed did come towards the middle of this picture as the boy had flashes of dead people. When the creepy music started I knew that another vision was about to happen, but I needed lots of descriptions to get me through those scenes with enough information to keep me on track.
The last scene was filled with time reversal flashes, too many to make sense of and very little information to follow. This was very frustrating and will inevitably take a good piece of the enjoyment out of this film for visually impaired people. Too bad. It's an intriguing movie that's worth a visit to the theater. But I can only give it a 4 and caution you to beware of the difficulties.
