Vibrant, young and hip Isabel, Julia Roberts, is in love with Luke, Ed Harris. Jackie, Susan Sarandon, Luke's ex-wife and the mother of Luke's two children, is openly repulsed by Isabel, however, she and Isabel find themselves consistently having to deal with each other as mom and stepmom to the kids. Jackie's righteous indignation grudgingly shifts as she finds out she is dying from cancer and the future of her children will be in the hands of Isabel.
From the visually impaired point of view: Although there were some moments of confusion, in general "Stepmom" was pretty easy to follow. There were only five main characters, all with distinct voices. The music was tasteful and did not interfere with any dialogue. The movie had a reasonable pace, one that made sense with no major abrupt scene changes.
Toward the latter part of the film, there were two scenes that were all visual, with the characters dancing to a couple of songs. This was obviously difficult, but was not devastating. Otherwise, my sighted assistant often did need to set a scene for me, but then once the scene was understood the dialogue carried me through in good fashion.
I'll give this one a 7. This will be a very interesting movie for you to see if you have any complexities in your family from divorces and new marriages.
