Jerry Fletcher, superbly played by Mel Gibson, is a New York City cab driver, obsessed about all different kinds of wild conspiracies. He'll tell any of his passengers about his theories, but is much more interested in revealing his speculations to Alice Sutton, portrayed by Julia Roberts. Sutton, who works for the Department of Justice, initially is placating to Jerry, who she thinks may be borderline psychotic. One of his theories, however, seems to have hit a very sensitive nerve with some bad guys, resulting in both their lives being threatened. I thought Gibson and Roberts played off each other really well in this movie.
From the visually impaired point of view, for a change the first five minutes of this picture were filled with dialogue, definitely a positive. Although I initially had difficulty discerning the male voices I was able to differentiate them clearly after a certain point. There were a number of action scenes with no dialogue that would have been impossible without a sighted assistant, and even then there were times my sighted assistant had difficulty explaining what was going on. Those were tough spots. There was enough dialogue to keep me relatively relaxed through a majority of the movie.
I'll give this one a five and encourage you to go with a good sighted assistant. If you hang in with this one, you just might like it.
