The band gets together with a new drummer in the summer of '64 and the ride to the top of the pop charts begins. Along with the fame and glory comes the typical trials and tribulations from the rise to stardom.
This is one of those rare flicks that is entertaining, and even uplifting at times, without any use of sex, or violence. Too many directors sell out by catering to society's addictive pull towards sex and violence to sell movies. Thank you, Tom Hanks, for creative directing while not giving in.
From the visually impaired point of view, "That Thing You Do!" is really tough to grasp. There was lots of music and the music was good, but I missed most of the things that were going on while the music was playing. There were innumerable scenes where I needed ongoing descriptions from my sighted assistant just to sustain some continuity. The scenes abruptly jumped back and forth in the beginning ten minutes of the movie, and then, just when things began to settle down the scenes would go silent with just music. Very difficult!
I cannot recommend this movie in general. But if you grew up in the sixties and you are a musician or have ever dreamed of being in a band, you might still enjoy this one in spite of the struggles. I rate this flick a 3.
